We rely upon our children’s school administrators to provide them a useful education about drugs including alcohol and the opportunity to develop the critical skills they’ll need to make sound decisions regarding their use. Many parents would be surprised however, to discover what kids are actually taught about drugs and drug users. Although the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program no longer dominates the school-based drug prevention field, students are still being “scared straight” and bullied into abstinence with threats of punitive consequences.
